Let’s Chat with PRISM’s Newest Licensed Stylist!
Many of you probably recognize this beautiful face if you’ve ever set foot in PRISM Hair, but if you haven’t, meet Alex! PRISM Hairs newly licensed cosmetologist! Alex has recently completed her 2.5 year apprenticeship with PRISM and passed both of her state board tests! But don’t be fooled, Alex has been perfecting her craft on the floor with guests under the guidance of our amazing educators for about a year and a half! Now let’s get to know her even more!
Q: How long have you been doing hair?
Alex: I started my apprenticeship with PRISM in October of 2021, and I just got licensed this February!
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about your apprenticeship here at PRISM?
Alex: My apprenticeship at PRISM Hair was a 2 year program where I was required to complete 3,000 hours in the salon. I got to watch and learn from all of the stylists that have worked here over the years, while also helping with laundry, cleaning, shampooing, and other assistant duties!
Q: What has been your favorite part of your apprenticeship?
Alex: My favorite part about my apprenticeship was definitely getting an in-salon experience. I got to create relationships with guests, stylists in the area, and learn the behind the scenes of the industry that you wouldn’t get through cosmetology school.
Q: What’s something you’ve loved learning about doing hair?
Alex: My favorite thing that I’ve learned about doing hair is any kind of highlighting. I enjoy balayage and foil highlighting because there are so many ways to customize the placement based on each guest's needs. Coloring in general is such a fun way to be creative!
Q: What made you want to become a hairstylist?
Alex: I’ve always had a creative side. From a young age I loved things like photography, pottery, painting, etc. Being able to create something beautiful with my own hands and being able to be unique in the ways that I express myself is always something that has made me happy. Hair became an extension of that and from the moment I started my apprenticeship it just came very naturally to me. It just felt very meant to be!
Q: What do you love about Richmond, Virginia?
Alex: Richmond is my home. It has so many amazing qualities, art, food, and a lot of history and charm. All of my family is here and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else long term.
Q: Are you working on anything exciting for 2024?
Alex: In 2024 I would love to focus on building relationships with guests and expanding my education outside of PRISM.
Q: What’s the hair tool you can’t live without?
Alex: The hair tool I refuse to ever live without is my blow dryer. You would be surprised at how many different styles you can get with just a blow dryer and a round brush. Plus, they are less damaging than the irons in my opinion.
Q: What’s the best hair advice you’ve ever been given?
Alex: The best advice I’ve been given in this industry is to do hair that you love. A lot of the time stylists reach a burn out from forcing themselves to do services they aren’t passionate about. Creating love and passion for what you’re doing and being proud of the work you put out is the key to being the most successful and happiest version of yourself as a stylist that you can be.
